About the Campus
Named after William Livingston, the first post-colonial governor of New Jersey, Livingston College was founded in 1969 as the first coeducational, liberal arts college of Rutgers University. Its mission was to bring together a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff in a shared-learning community committed to the pursuit of academic innovation and excellence. Today, that mission is embraced by the entire university, and the Livingston Campus distinctively emphasizes building community through leadership and understanding. The University states: "Livingston embodied the spirit of social responsibility and cultural awareness demanded by students of the time."

The college buildings were erected on the Kilmer Campus (later renamed Livingston Campus) in Piscataway, New Jersey. The land had formerly been part of the U.S. Army's Camp Kilmer, a staging area during World War II. The army reserve still uses a small part of the original camp today. A large amount of parking was created on this campus, mainly because the Louis Brown Athletic Center, which hosts all Rutgers men's and women's basketball games. Livingston's goal is to offer an undergraduate education that prepares every student to think critically and to act responsibly in the contemporary world.

The Louis Brown Athletic Center is located on the Livingston Campus. Open since 1977, the athletic center, known as the RAC, hosts all home mens and womens basketball games as well as graduation ceremonies for Livingston College students.
